I Want My Hour Back

I always have the hardest time adjusting to daylight savings time. I hate it really. I’m going to sound like a big grouch here, but I’m much, much more of a night person. My mom used to call me a vampire when I was a teenager…now that I think about it, she still does. When I can, I’m still up until 3 or 4 in the morning and sleep until 11. So that’s what I did last night. I just can’t get used to this time change thing and now I’m just tired. And it’s giving me a headache.

But back to last night. I went and saw No Country for Old Men and it was amazing! Very, very depressing and moody, but amazing nonetheless. If you can catch it in the theaters before it leaves, I highly suggest that even though it comes out on DVD tomorrow. Of course I didn’t get home until 1 in the morning and I was wide awake, so I stayed up and read. I’m reading Jane Austen’s Persuasion right now and it’s shocking the hell out of me! I actually like it! This is my first foray into the territory of Austen and I didn’t know if I’d enjoy her books or not. You couldn’t pick a more different author from what I normally read, but this is really good. I’m loving the character of Anne for those who have read this one. She’s great…and I’m hoping she remains that way. Only about 60 pages in right now.

I guess I’m straying away from fantasy for a couple of weeks before the Once Upon a Time challenge starts. I’m so excited about that one! I plan on getting lots read for that. I don’t have a definite list planned yet, but I can tell you that I plan on reading lots more than 5 or so books. I want to read nothing but fantasy during the challenge and just knock out all of the fantasy books on the TBR list. Seeing as this is my favorite genre of books I’m psyched! This should allow me to get a good bit of review books reviewed as well! Can’t wait til Carl posts “the post”!

Ok, I’m off to nurture this migraine…signing off until next time…

  1. I hope by the time you read this, that damn migraine has taken its leave!

I’m glad you’re enjoying the Austen, even though that may mean I’m totally alone in my unsophistication :(

And I know what you mean about Carl’s official post…I swear I check 5 times a day to see if he’s put it up yet. I’ve been sort of making myself wait until then to put together my list, but it’s driving me crazy!

  2. Sorry about your headache, Chris. I’ve got one this afternoon, too, which is unusual for me these days, so I’ll bet it’s this *#&% time change. On the other hand, I’m glad you’re enjoying Persuasion… I actually think it’s my favorite Austen. And I can’t wait for Carl’s Once Upon a Time Challenge II to begin, either!

  3. Debi, It’s slowly, very slowly taking it’s leave. The doctor gave me fioricet now so I’m trying that to see if it’ll work! I’m really surprised that I’m liking this Austen book. Totally never thought that I would and it by no means makes you unsophisticated if you don’t! And good lord Debi, like I’m sophisticated! I’m about as far from sophisticated as you get and I’m the first to admit it. I’ve been checking Carl’s blog like crazy too :p I can’t wait til he puts up the post…it’s like Christmas eve for us book bloggers! I’m waiting to see the different challenges until I put together my list!

Robin, Thanks…I’m sorry you have a headache too :( They’re miserable aren’t they? I think it’s the $#%#$% time change too :p Glad to hear that I picked a good Austen to start with: your favorite! I also have Northanger Abbey which I’m going to read later on in the year. And yay for the OUaT challenge!

  4. Daylight savings always seems kinder to me in the fall than the spring. I’ve been extra tired/cranky today but didn’t think it was probably because I missed some sleep. Sorry to hear about your headache.

  5. I read Little Women a few years back and enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would. Who knew a book written so long ago can still be so wonderful today. I’m not much into the fantasy genre, but an ready with a pile of books I bought just for Once Upon a Time Challenge. I can’t wait to branch out!

  6. Amen to getting that hour back! I stayed up until 1a (very late for me) and I didn’t realize until the next morning it was like I had stayed up until 2am! I was mad at myself, because by the time I woke up and realized it, it was too late to get any more sleep!

I’m going to bed early tonight to make up for it. Hope your migraine gets better soon.

  7. Sorry about your head, Chris. I’m hating the time change too. I think the second day is worse than the first. I’m hoping it will eventually get better. Though I am not a morning person at all. I am a night owl. :) A definite night owl. That’s when I do most of my reading.

I am SO SO happy you’re enjoying Persuasion. It’s probably my favorite Austen. Pride and Prejudice is great. But Anne. Anne is more my style. You should try to see the movie when you’re done, the 1995 movie that is. (Though I’d be curious to get your opinion on the new movie (2007) after you finish the book. I hope that makes sense. The movie is done in such a way…I don’t want to say they completely ruined the book. But it’s just different. Very different. There are *some* people on Amazon that loved it, but it’s got its haters too.)

I’m looking forward to Carl’s challenge too. I’m already trying to think of titles I’m going to try to fit in!!!

  8. Jeane, I LOVE daylight savings time in the Fall! :p I never complain then because we gain an hour of sleep…it’s this pesky loss of an hour that I hate! Hope your mood is better tomorrow and that you’re more awake! And thanks….the headache finally went away thank God!

Stephanie, That was my thing too. I’m usually not too big on books written “back in the day” though I do love Dickens. But I’m really enjoying this Austen. I’m so excited that you have a stack of Fantasy :) The genre is so broad that there really is something for everyone. People who don’t even like fantasy can find something these days…something like the Time Traveler’s Wife could even technically fit in I guess. Can’t wait to see your list!!!

Kim, The migraine’s all gone now after a few hours of sleep, thanks! Hope you get more sleep tonight…daylight savings time always throws off my sleep schedule! Guessing it does that to a lot of people.

Becky, I think the second day is definitely worse than the first! Hopefully tomorrow I’ll wake up all recharged and readjusted to the time change though. I’m most certainly a night owl too. That’s when I do most of my reading as well. I’m glad to hear that I picked such a good Austen to start with! That’s two votes for Persuasion as a favorite! I’m definitely going to see the movie when I’m done. That was the plan. And it’ll definitely be the 1995 version. I’ve seen most of the older BBC productions of her novels, but I hadn’t seen Persuasion or Northanger Abbey, so that’s why I picked those two for the challenge….I didn’t know the stories. From the Austen fans that I know, they all hate the new productions that PBS has been showing. They sound pretty awful from what I’ve heard…I’ll probably check them out though. And yeah, can’t wait for Carl’s challenge!!!

  9. I love my sleep and hate loosing an hour. I think my body clock is about the same as yours but my husbands is nocturnal. He would stay up until about 8am and get up again at 2pm given the choice. It’s all about reading some classics to break up your reading habbits. I started doing that last year and was surprised how many great books I found. Do you know when the Once Upon a Time Challenge officially starts?

  10. I’m not a fan of daylight saving times either. It’ll only start at the end of the month here…I am not looking forward to it.

I’m glad you’re enjoying Jane Austen! I can’t wait to try her later this year.

And I’m very very excited for Once Upon a Time II! My list is ready in my head…can’t wait for “the post”!

  11. As for the time change… I just wish they’d leave it one time or the other and not keep changing it!!! Grrrrrrr

Ohh glad you are enjoying your Austin read! I don’t think I’d like to read those.. although I do LOVE the movies made from the books very much!

I hope you read the other two dragonriders of pern for Carls fantasy read!! (then anything else you want, but it’s a good “reason” to finish that trilogy) I plan on reading (rereading) the first 6 Dragonlance books by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. But of course, the best “plans” can always be changed lol lol..

glad your headache is all gone baby boy… they sure suck big time!

  12. Yes, the loss of the hour sucks in major ways. I hate going to bed AND getting up when it is dark outside. Yuck. Makes me feel as if I haven’t slept at all. What a stupid marketing ploy the whole thing is.

Glad you’re enjoying Austen. I’m surprised you chose that one to read first as it isn’t the most popular of her works. If you like it I think you’ll like her others as well. I’ve read Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Northanger Abbey and enjoyed them all. I may have read Sense and Sensibility but I cannot recall.

  13. Oh the time change always catches me unprepared…glad that we still have some days left…but it doesn mean that we’re heading towards the summer and that does cheers me up!

I’ve never read jane Austen either, only those mandatory excerpts in school and never thought I would enjoy it…but I must give her a try some day, I might be wrong:P

  14. Persuasion is my absolute favorite Jane Austen novel. All that regret. The first ones I read were Emma (in junior high school when I was reading Villette and Vanity Fair) I read Pride and Prejudice later and thought it was okay….. But this one….wow! The best. The absolute best. Mansfield Park is also really neat. Don’t watch the new Mansfield Park film that came out…a joke that one…but the Ciaran Hinds Persuasion was pretty good.

I guess the themes of people living in the almost-ruin of their lives because of intrusive know-it-alls with too much influence ….well, the sense of near ruin and the sense of greif that permeates Persuasion….perfectly done! And honestly, I think it’s one of the most heartfelt of Austen’s novels. -C

  15. I’m with you. It seems like it takes me longer each year to adjust to the hour difference in Spring. And I’m a total night person. Always have been. I hope your headache is better today.

Persuasion is the only Austen novel I have ever read. And I really enjoyed it. I’m hoping to add a couple more to the list in the next few months though.

  16. glad to hear “no country for old men” is good!

and glad you like austen so far! i read and realyl enjoyed “pride and prejudice”.

i can’t wait for the “once upon a time” challenge either and, like you, have also been not reading fantasy… :)

and, as it happens, i actually have the perfect book for this challenge… a certain “game of thrones”. don’t know if you’ve heard of it… ;)

  17. Rhinoa, I’d stay up until 8 too if I could, but I always feel too incredibly guilty if I sleep that much of the day away. Though I end up doing it most of the time anyway when I can :p OUaT starts on March 21st according to Carl! So it’s really soon! Just 10 more days!!

Nymeth, Daylight savings time just sucks! Prepare now!! lol. I’m sure you’ll enjoy Austen when you get to her. If I’m enjoying her then I know you will. Your reading tastes are much more cultivated than mine! And OUaT is going to be great this year! Can’t wait!

Deslily, I’m right with you on that one! I wish they would just decide on a damn time and leave it there! It’s ridiculous. I loved the Austen movies too which is what made me read the books. I’ve been told by everyone that if you enjoy the movies, you’ll enjoy the books…and I am! It’s just like the movies :) I’m hoping to read Pern as bonus reads during Carl’s challenge. I want to do some serious damage to the fantasy on my TBR shelf during the challenge. We’ll see if that happens.

Carl, I think that I’m finally adjusting to daylight savings time. Though of course it’s easier for me because since I’m jobless I don’t have to wake up while it’s still dark :p One of the perks! I went with Persuasion because it was one of the only works of Austen’s that I hadn’t seen a film version of. So I wanted to read something that I was unfamiliar with. I’m really enjoying it so far! I also have Northanger Abbey which I’ll probably read during RIP III as I haven’t seen that one either.

Valentina, You know I usually love the winter, but I’m so over it this year. I’m ready for the summer too. Or at least the spring! But I’m sure that once those 90 degree temperatures come around, I’ll be begging for winter again! I never thought I’d enjoy Austen either, but decided to sign up for a Jane Austen challenge. I figured it would be a REAL challenge, but it’s not! I’m enjoying it.

Carole, Well it looks like I picked a good one! This is the third vote now for Persuasion as a favorite! It is a much more melancholy novel than I had ever imagined and I think that’s why I’m enjoying it so much. Not at all what I pictured. It’s an extremely heartfelt novel. Can’t wait to see the film version as it’s one of the few Austen’s that I haven’t seen. I’ve been waiting to watch it after the book!

Steph, I hate daylight saving in the Spring…love it in the fall! We get an extra hour in the fall! :) I’ve always been a night person too. Which is horrible when you work an 8-5 job. that’s been the only good thing about not having a job is being off of that schedule! The headache is gone, thanks!

JP, No Country for Old Men was excellent…much better than what I had expected actually. For some reason I was prepared to hate it, but I went to see it anyway. Turned out that I loved it! I’ll have to read Pride and Prejudice some time. I’m so familiar with the story that I was afraid that it would ruin the book experience, but I guess it wouldn’t. Can’t wait for OUaT!!! Yay for 3 months of reading nothing but fantasy!!! And I’m very glad you’re reading A Game of Thrones! In fact, I read a Game of Thrones for the first time last year for the challenge, so I hope you have the same experience as me. Though it took me the whole month of May to read it!

  18. I missed that you had a headache too. Sucks don’t it? Mine finally went but it might come back tonight as it gets later. I’m so glad you like Persuasion! Anne is a great character.

  19. Other Chris, Glad to hear that your headache is gone for now! Hope it stays gone…they do indeed suck :( Anne is a wonderful character. Hope she ends up happy!

  20. honestly, I think everyone hates daylight savings. I’ve never met anyone who didn’t want it discontinued, post-haste.

  21. Heather, Right on! I’ve yet to meet a person who enjoys it! We need a petition…
